Former county resident charged with tax fraud

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Former county resident charged with tax fraud

A Virginia man and former Niagara County resident is facing tax fraud charges after his arrest last week in Lockport.

Thomas L.S. Deponceau, 27, of Whitehaven Crescent, Chesapeake, Va., has been charged with two counts of third-degree criminal tax fraud, one a class D felony and the other a class E felony.

Deponceau was arrested last week by New York State Police in Lockport.

State police said the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance conducted an investigation in which they discovered Deponceau failed to file and report his 2010 and 2011 state personal income tax returns which totaled over $16,000. But the investigation revealed that the personal income was the result of Deponceau collecting scrap metal from various locations in Niagara County.

Deponceau was arraigned before Town of Cambria Judge Amel S. Jowdy and was remanded to Niagara County Jail on $2,000 bail. He was released on bail Friday.
