Middleport may take title to business property

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A county committee is recommending the Legislature approve transfer of a tax-delinquent property to the Village of Middleport.

Per a vote by the administration committee Tuesday, a resolution will go to the lawmaking body next week authorizing the transfer of 31 Main St., which the county obtained through tax foreclosure several years ago.

The village had the small building, on the south end cap of a row of commercial buildings, demolished on the recommendation of Middleport Fire Department. The long-abandoned building was a public safety hazard and the village footed the $30,000-plus demolition tab, which included asbestos remediation, according to village Clerk-Treasurer Rebecca Schweigert. The village could have put liens on the property, and basically sought repayment from the county, but instead asked for the title, she said Tuesday.

The onus will be on the village to find a private buyer for the property and get it back on the tax roll. Also, assistant county attorney Joe Foltz said, the village must agree not to hit up the county if environmental or other problems surface on the property in the future.

The parcel’s assessed value is $3,700. The village does not have a buyer in sight presently, Schweigert said.

In other business, the administration committee recommended the county “accept” a $50,000 prize from Coca Cola Inc., in whose online “America Is Your Park” contest Krull Park was named the No. 2 park in the United States this past summer.

Coca Cola is awarding the prize on the condition it be used to build or restore athletic facilities; Robin Devoe, county deputy public works commissioner, said basketball courts will be added at the park and the tennis court may be improved.
