Zoning change approved for rock quarry

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — TOWN OF LOCKPORT –– A Lockport town zoning code change was approved Wednesday involving LaFarge’s stone pit expansion.

The Town Board voted Wednesday to create a section in the zoning ordinance that would allow LaFarge to move the border of its existing stone pit 160 feet closer to the north side of Hinman Road. The quarry previously ended 300 feet from the road.

Action on the change had been delayed following a public hearing earlier this month, during which a number of town residents shared concerns about the zoning amendment. Smith said town officials received a number of letters from residents, both for the zoning change and against it.

The biggest concern was expansion of LaFarge’s quarry pit beyond Hinman Road, Supervisor Marc R. Smith said. Councilman Paul W. Siejak said that’s what he heard from residents as well.

But the zoning change and expansion beyond Hinman were two different things, town officials said.

”We’re not looking at expansion now,” said Councilman Mark C. Crocker. “I’m okay with the 160 feet.”

Crocker said LaFarge indicated it would contact nearby homeowners by phone when the company started blasting in the quarry. Any damage, from blasting or fallen rocks, would be covered, as the company is fully insured, Crocker said.

“And they’re willing to work with homeowners,” he said.

Wednesday’s approval included accepting a state environmental quality review, or SEQRA, of the zoning change that stated there would be no adverse effect on the environment.

In other town news, the board approved the purchase of two vehicles for the highway department.

The first was a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck from Joe Basil Chevrolet for $27,649, under a state bid. The second vehicle was a 2013 International plow truck for $145,872.34. Both purchases were covered in the 2012 town budget.
