Probe into Pendleton fire continues

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Niagara County fire investigators continue to probe the cause of a fire that occurred Thursday night in a Town of Pendleton home.

According to reports from the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, both occupants were able to escape the fire at 5362 Mapleton Road without injury.

“When I got out of the house with my wife, the only one who was there was a neighbor,” homeowner Roy Hughes said. “He saw the fire and called 911 then came over to see if we got out.”

Niagara County dispatchers reported fielding several 911 calls about the fire.

The blaze, which was reported Feb. 14 around 6:38 p.m., appeared to have started on the southwest side of the residence and damaged a rear porch. The garage was also heavily damaged.

Media outlets including the US&J obtained information that ammunition in the basement was going off due to the fire, however county officials have not confirmed there was any ammunition.
