Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — TOWN OF LOCKPORT — The old carpenters union hall will be undergoing exterior work sometime in the near future.
At a meeting Wednesday, Lockport Town Board members discussed the building and needed improvements. The town received three bids, with the low bidder being Sicoli Construction Services of Niagara Falls, which came in at $58,700.
The board is expected to award the bid at its next meeting on March 6. Work will include roofing repairs as well as siding and building trim.
”Basically the building is pretty leaky and rotted at this point,” Smith said.
Wendel, the town’s engineering firm, took a look at the union hall and found some mold in the walls and insulation, Smith said. The exterior walls have been taken down and spray foam insulation will be put in.
In April 2011, the town bought the building from Hillman Automotive for $250,000. The union hall is located at 6570 Dysinger Road, next to the town hall.
In other town news, board members unanimously voted Wednesday to support the Niagara County Legislature’s resolution asking Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state legislature to repeal the SAFE Act. Lockport joins a number of other towns that have passed similar resolutions against the controversial gun control law.
• Smith reported to the Town Board that the state Department of Transportation will begin construction of a sidewalk extension on Robinson Road in 2014. The extension will run from Centre Street to South Transit Road. The work will be done by the DOT, while the town will be responsible for buying the bridge.
• A 40-vehicle parking lot will be added to Day Road Park sometime in 2013, Smith said. The lot will be located in the southwest corner of the park, which sits at the corner of Day Road and East High Street. Part of the lot will include a walking path that will connect the lot to the other paths.
Smith said the lot would sit 60 feet from the road. Materials for the lot is expected to cost $10,300, which will come from the town’s surplus fund. Official board action is expected at its March 6 meeting.Contact reporter Joe Olenick at 439-9222, ext. 6241.
