LHS asks drivers not to text

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — There’s two reasons Lockport High School wants as many people as possible to stop texting while driving.

The first is it’ll make driving safer. And if enough make that commitment with the high school, the second reason is Lockport could win money or host a Kelly Clarkson concert.

Lockport is enrolled in State Farm’s Celebrate My Drive, a program that promotes the advantages of driving while teaching all drivers positive habits to help avoid crashes. And starting this week, Celebrate My Drive is hosting an online contest where schools are asking people to make a no texting while driving pledge.

State Farm is giving out eight grants of $100,000 each and 90 grants of $25,000 each. The two schools with the most pledges will win a concert with Kelly Clarkson in addition to $100,000 grants.

People can go to www.celebratemydrive.com, register with Lockport High School and make their commitment, once per day, every day. People can also make a commitment on Celebrate My Drive’s Facebook page. The contest runs today through Oct. 26.

Lockport teacher Diane DeYoung said the commitments can be made by people over the age of 14.

“We’re asking the public to help,” she said. “It’ll help save lives too.”

Schools are being divided into two categories, large schools with more than 750 kids and small schools with less than that. One grand prize, four other $100,000 grants and 45 of the $25,000 grants will be given out to each category. For each grant awarded, a minimum of 10 percent of the prize value must be used toward teen driver safety initiatives in the 2013-14 school year, State Farm said.

Winners will be notified between Oct. 27 and Nov. 5, with an official announcement Dec. 9. Grants will be awarded in the winter and Clarkson will perform sometime in the spring.

As of Thursday night, 3,572 high schools were registered, according to the Celebrate My Drive website.
