Sheriff urges residents to check registry

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — There are 470 registered sex offenders in Niagara County and 270 of them are listed on the Niagara County Sheriff's Office website, Sheriff James R. Voutour announced Friday.

With the start of summer, Voutour encouraged residents to check the website to see where registered sex offenders live in proximity to them. The sheriff's website is niagarasheriff.com.

Visitors can click on the red “Sex Offender Management” link on the website and follow the instructions to check their neighborhood and sign up to receive email alerts. The confidential email alert service is through the sheriff’s office and Offender Watch, which monitors addresses/neighborhoods and keeps residents up-to-date on newly registered sex offenders.

Once a requesting resident has registered an address, the system will automatically alert him/her in real time, via email, when a sex offender moves within a 0.25 to 2-mile radius of the registered home. Any addresses where a family spends time can be registered.

For more information, call Deputy Joseph Flagler at 438-3314.

By state law, only Level 2 and Level 3 registered sex offenders are listed in public directories.
