Faulty transformer caused power outage in theater district

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal —

A power outage Sunday caused by a large underground transformer defecting kept East Avenue businesses out of commission on Monday.

Scripts Cafe and The Palace Theatre both closed Monday due to lack of power.

The transformer is being replaced with a newer transformer, which has taken about three days to replace, Rachel Buchanan of NYSEG's community outreach and development department said.

Buchanan said that the wiring of the new transformer should be completed by today.

On Tuesday, Scripts and The Palace were both running on a generator provided by NYSEG. The cafe was open Tuesday, but the theater canceled its Tuesday movie screening.

“The box didn't want to risk having people come in for a movie while we're running on generator power,” Chris Parada, executive director of the theater said.

The power outage forced the theater to cancel Sunday's matinee performance of “Peter Pan”. A special make-up performance has been scheduled for this Saturday at 2 p.m. Anyone who had tickets to Sunday's scheduled performance can attend the Saturday afternoon and retain the same seats.

“If that's not convenient, ticket holders can call us any time this week to exchange their tickets or get a refund,” Parada said.

The Palace box office can be reached at 438-1130.
