Lockport man charged in robbery

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal —

A Niagara County Sheriff's deputy apprehended a suspect within minutes of an armed holdup in Lewiston early Wednesday, and a Town of Lockport man faces a felony robbery charge for the crime.

Danny Merritt, 32, of 5403 Murphy Road, is alleged to have robbed the Sanborn Family Mart just after 2 a.m.

According to a report from the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, about $200 in cash was taken when the suspect displayed a knife to the store clerk, then fled in a small black car, traveling south on Route 429.

A deputy traveling west on Mapleton Road heard the robbery report on his police scanner and proceeded west on Lockport Road, where an eastbound vehicle fitting the description in the crime passed him near Nash Road.

The deputy turned around and stopped the vehicle, a blue 1989 Ford Escort, at 2:12 a.m., just four minutes after the robbery was reported.

Additional deputies arrived and as the first deputy approached the vehicle, he saw the driver leaning over into the passenger seat. The deputy ordered the man to show his hands.

The man complied and the deputy saw the driver's face was dripping with sweat and his hands were "shaking heavily."

Asked where he was coming from the driver, who identified himself as Merritt, said he was at a friend's house in Niagara Falls. He explained his heavy sweating on the heat.

A search of the car and Merritt produced $80 cash but no weapon. Deputies had Merritt sit on the bumper of his car, and they noticed his "entire body shaking" during that time.

Merritt denied knowing anything about the robbery, but when deputies brought him to the store, the clerk identified Merritt as the robber.
