Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Julie Muscato needed some room.
Her interior design and home decor business was growing. But there was a challenge. Being able to show customers the pieces of furniture they were considering proved to be a difficult task. Muscato’s first home on Davison Road just didn’t have the space for a showroom.
“We couldn’t carry stock,” Muscato said.
After meeting with developer David Ulrich, Julie Muscato Interior Design moved to 80 Main St., Suite H. The new location opened back in September, and since then the extra space has worked out nicely.
Muscato’s offers upholstery, wallpaper, window treatments and so on. But now there is a furniture showroom, filled with items customers can see before making a decision. In fact, rushing into a decision is one thing Muscato advises people not to do when it comes to home decor.
“Stay away from quick decisions, use people like us as sounding boards,” she said. “You can do a lot to a room without a using a lot of money.”
Muscato is also a Hunter Douglas dealer. Hunter Douglas is a well-known manufacturer of window treatments and window decor. The company only does business with licensed dealers.
Muscato’s interior design business began about two-and-a-half years ago on Davison Road. Opening on Davison was the result of Muscato wanting to return to the workforce, after years of being a stay-at-home mother. Muscato has an interior design degree, which made starting the business even more sensible.
While customers come from all over the area, the support Muscato has received from Lockport in particular has been great to see, she said. Handling jobs of all sizes, word of mouth and customer referral has been the biggest source of clients for Muscato.
Also, working with local businesses is something she strives for too. For example, when talking about a kitchen with a customer, Muscato can work with Lockport businesses like Kitchen Concepts, Candlelight Cabinetry or Millwork 2000.
And one of the things Muscato likes about the interior design business is how closely you work with, or get to know, the customer. After all, what is more personal than a home?
