Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — As it prepares for an eight-show run of the popular musical, “The Sound of Music,” Artpark is dedicating the 2013 production to the late Brother Augustine Towey.
Described by Artpark officials as a visionary leader of Western New York’s theater community, Towey, affectionately known as “Bro,” served as director of the “The Sound of Music” when it was last staged at Artpark in 1997.
Before the opening night performance on at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Father Joseph Levesque will make a brief tribute to Brother Augustine. The production runs through July 19.
Brother Augustine is credited with developing Niagara University’s theatre program into one of the most respected in the United States. Brother Augustine taught literature, speech and directed more than 135 plays at NU. His involvement with the Niagara University Theatre Players led to the current acclaimed theatre program.
Brother Augustine directed at Artpark, Opera Sacra, Irish Classical Theatre Company, and the BPO. He was the founder and director of Artpark Repertory Theatre from its inception in 1975 until 2003. In 1994, Artpark & Company honored Brother Augustine for his contributions to the arts in Western New York by dedicating a chair in the Mainstage Theater to him. He went on to receive many awards in the region for his work in the arts.
The Western New York theatre community said goodbye to Brother Augustine on Thanksgiving of 2012, after his long battle with illness. The local theatre world remembers Bro for building up theatre programs and nurturing countless actors along the way.
Eight performances of The Sound of Music will be presented in the Mainstage Theater Thursday through July 19.
