Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Hundreds of bicyclists will be traveling through Lockport today as the 15th annual Cycling the Erie Canal tour, passes through town.

The bikers will be pedaling toward Albany, as they cover 400 miles over eight days. Beginning this morning at the Nichols School in Buffalo, the group will break around midday at the Amherst Erie Canal Museum before heading north through Lockport and then east to Medina, where they will camp overnight.

Covering between 40 and 60 miles per day, cyclists travel along the Erie Canalway Trail which is about three-quarters complete.  When the Trail is finished, it will be the longest intra-state trail in the United States.

“The 15th annual Cycling the Erie Canal tour is a wonderful way to explore the Erie Canal and Upstate New York.  Plus it’s fun, healthy, and good for the economy,” said Parks & Trails New York Executive Director Robin Dropkin. “We have cyclists from 36 states and several countries, from 4 to 89 years old. And, they all get to experience what makes the Erie Canal and Upstate New York so special.”
