Veterans running town fitness gym in Town of Lockport

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The military has a way of accomplishing goals. And when it comes to fitness, so does CrossFit House of Dunamis.

The gym is operated by brothers Zachary Ferguson and Sam Sacco with Jillian Brennan. CrossFit House of Dunamis is located within Flips Gymnastics on 6017 South Transit Road in the Town of Lockport.

Both Sacco and Ferguson served in the military. Sacco was in the Army National Guard for eight years, which included spending 12 months in Afghanistan. Ferguson spent three years in the Army, including 12 months in Iraq.

Ferguson was medically discharged with a broken ankle, which brought him back to Western New York. After some time, the Tonawanda native noticed he needed to get back into shape.

”I needed to make a change,” he said.

That led Ferguson to discover CrossFit, which was both a company and a fitness philosophy. The CrossFit franchise grew out of a fitness regimen developed by Greg Glassman over several decades.

As a company, CrossFit provides accredited training seminars throughout the world and publishes several websites providing extensive free content, including workouts, training and support for becoming fit. There’s more than 5,500 affiliated gyms and more than 35,000 accredited CrossFit Level 1 trainers.

And, then there’s the CrossFit Games, a competition where the company crowns the Fittest Man and Woman on Earth. The nearest CrossFit locations are in Williamsville and North Tonawanda.

The CrossFit training is designed for all fitness levels, from those out-of-shape up to trainers and athletes. Ferguson said some of the exercises are based around everyday movements and functionality.

But what really helps is the community feel. Those who come to CrossFit interact with the trainers instead of just putting on headphones and zoning out during the workout, Ferguson said.

Ferguson, Sacco and Brennan are all studying at Niagara County Community College under the personal training certification program.
