Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The weekly Community Market on Canal Steet will be open through the end of September, organizers announced this week.
Extension of the 2013 market season, which was set to end this Saturday, was requested by farm vendors who’ve started seeing regular customers among the hundreds of people stopping by the market on any given Saturday, according to director Heather Peck.
“September is the time where they have really good produce — apples, squash, all of that good stuff — and they wanted to keep the momentum going,” she said.
With support from the City of Lockport, which will extend the market’s insurance coverage, and a modest balance in the market’s promotion budget to continue advertising and update lawn signs, Peck was able to secure five more Saturday markets. The last one will be Sept. 28.
In the final five weeks, market hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; operation is reduced by one hour. Joining five fruit-and-vegetable growers will be vendors of fresh eggs, meat and maple syrup, and several returning and new niche retailers.
“It’ll be an abridged version of the market. There won’t be as many vendors, but we’ll have a good sampling of the wonderful products that we’ve been seeing here all summer,” Peck said.
This week, the market is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and it’s joined by four new vendors: The Catering Crew, serving muffins, cinnamon rolls, cookies, granola, barbecue sauce and yogurt parfait; crafter Joyce Collingwood, who hand-paints decorative items from Christmas ornaments and birdhouses to wine glasses and wooden stools; portrait artist Christine Miller; and JP Madison salon of Lockport, selling hair products and hair wraps for children.
Live music is scheduled at the Canal Street gazebo and free children’s activities are ongoing at the market and the Erie Canal Discovery Center, 24 Church St.
