Classic car haven

Olcott expects more than 1,000 classic cars for show

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — OLCOTT BEACH —Classic car owners have found this community on Lake Ontario to be an ideal spot to show off their automobiles as the summer season comes to a close.

More than 1,200 cars are expected Saturday as the Time Travelers of Western New York present the 24th annual Olcott Beach Classic Car Show at Krull Park.

Olcott began its car show on a small scale on Main Street. Since the Time Travelers became involved 20 years ago, it’s grown to the largest one-day car show in Western New York.

“When we took it over it was just a little show just on the streets,” said Rick Mann, the president of Time Travelers. “We’ve taken it into the park and it’s just grown phenomenally. It’s just a great location, overlooking Lake Ontario. It’s a nice drive and people like to take their cars out.”

Cars come from neighboring states and southern Ontario and lineup for the 8 a.m. registration. Only 1,000 cars are allowed in Krull Park, but last year nearly 1,400 classic automobiles came.

“We run a very good car show,” said Mann, a Lockport auto technician for Mac’s Antique Auto Parts. “We know what the needs are of the people. We judge cars fairly and you can’t beat the location.”

There is no pre-registration. The registration fee is $15 and the event has benefitted the Ronald McDonald’s House in Buffalo for each of the last 10 years.

Crafters and vendors will be on site and there will be a basket raffle. Dennis Gage of the Speed Channel will be at the show filming for a future episode for “My Classic Car.”

Ted Westbrook of Pendleton took first place in the Oldsmobile division last year with his 1969 Hurst Olds. This year he plans to drive up in a in a 1972 Olds which was a pace car for the Indianapolis 500.
