Car drives off road, up wire

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Lockport police are investigating a Friday morning accident in which a vehicle came to rest atop a utility pole guy wire.

City police and firefighters responded to a report just before 11 a.m. of a vehicle striking a pole at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Davison Road, while en route they were told there were possible live wires downed and on top of the car.

Upon their arrival, emergency responders found a Pontiac Aztek pointing skyward at a 45-degree angle, supported only by the wire attached to the New York State Electric & Gas utility pole.

The scene attracted dozens of onlookers, who came out of nearby businesses to watch; drivers pulled into nearby parking lots to observe the scene. Many people snapped pictures with their camera phones.

Lockport firefighters and police, assisted by Niagara County sheriff’s deputies worked to remove the driver from the vehicle, which was still in drive upon their arrival. It took emergency personnel a few minutes to secure the vehicle and turn off the engine.

First responders used a step ladder to reach the driver, who appeared to be alert when brought back to the ground on a backboard. The driver, who was not identified, was treated by Lockport fire paramedics and transported to Eastern Niagara Hospital - Lockport.

Tire indentations in the grass indicate the driver was traveling west on Lincoln when the vehicle went off the road. The vehicle likely would have struck the pole without the guy wire.

Lincoln Avenue was closed to traffic during the rescue.

Firefighters remained on scene until a NYSEG crew arrived and the car was removed from the wire.

Police had not released details on the accident or the driver’s condition as of press time.
