Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Niagara County residents can enjoy a cruise every night of the week this season and can start with the Lockport Cruise on Monday at Ida Fritz Park which is sponsored by the Lockport Optimist Cruise.

”It’s family, fun and free. It’s like a big picnic,” said city councilman Pat Schrader who has been running the show for 11 of its 12 years.

Lockport Cruise, which is held at Ida Fritz Park, begins at 6 p.m. and goes until dark on Mondays.

The city season runs 17 dates. The Memorial Day Super Cruise is May 27. The Labor Day Cruise which will be held from 3 until 9 p.m. on Sept. 2.

Close-by cruise nights will be held at Widewaters, Olcott and Pendleton.

The Cruise Optimists raise money through the concessions. The net profit is donated to several charities, particularly Camp Happiness at Camp Kenan.

The vendor’s fee helps the Optimists raise money. Vendors provide beer, hotdogs, roast beef, pizza and collectables at the Main and Transit site. The city provides picnic tables and security.

The number of cars entered can depend on the weather and the models of cars. Usually 75 to 150 cars are shown off at the blocked off area.

The Optimists have Corvette Night, Mustang Night and British Car Night. There is also Military Night, Law Enforcement Night, Children’s Night and Ladies Night.

There is no charge to enter a car and there are intangible rewards.

”They bring cars for camaraderie and meet friends,” Schraeder said.

Hank Nevins of WBEN-Radio provides old rock ‘n roll music at local cruises three nights a week. He sees a lot of the same people when the cruises are close by.

Pendleton plans to connect a cruise night to its farmers market from 3 until 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning July 11, according to Councilman Ronald Morrison. It will be the first year for the car show.

”We’ll run it for the next next  two years and see how it turns out,” Morrison said.

Main events are planned for the Ransomville Community Fair on June 8; The Miller Hose Father’s Day Car Show on June 16. The Pirates Festival Car show at Krull Park in Olcott on July 13 and the Olde Sanborn Days Car Classic on July 14.

The Niagara County Fair Classic Car Show will be held on Aug. 4 at the  Niagara County Fairgrounds. The Canal Fest Car Cruise in North Tonawanda on Aug. 17. The Olcott Beach Classic Car Show is Aug. 31.
