Mexican charged with Newfane robbery

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A Mexican citizen in the U.S. illegally has been charged with a robbery at a Newfane pharmacy earlier this month, according to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office.

Martin H. Reyes, 23, 1573 Van Buren St., Olcott, has been charged with third-degree robbery and petit larceny. Reyes was arrested at about 4 p.m. Friday and is being held at the Niagara County Jail on $20,000 bail.

Reyes was arraigned in Newfane Town Court and is set to return at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The charges were the result of an investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Border Patrol. A detainer has been placed on Reyes by U. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Reyes is being charged with the Nov. 11 robbery of the Newfane Pharmacy. According to the Sheriff’s Office report on the robbery, the suspect entered the pharmacy and reportedly claimed he was armed with an explosive device and someone was holding his child hostage.

Employees called 911 reporting a man had entered the store and demanded Opana, a prescription painkiller, then put a package on the checkout counter and told the clerk it was a transmitter that could blow something up.

The suspect was described as a male, approximately 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing between 130 and 140 pounds. The suspect wore baggy jeans, a green hoodie, boots, one purple latex medical glove and a blue bandanna over his face. Witnesses guessed he has brown eyes and a darker complexion, investigators said.

Reyes is 5 foot 6 inches, with hazel eyes and weighs about 150 pounds, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
