Smoking vent forced Walmart evacuation

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal —

The Lockport Walmart was evacuated for about a half-hour Saturday afternoon due to what an employee called a "fire scare."

Crews from South Lockport Volunteer Fire Co. and the Niagara County Sheriff's Officer responded to a call about an odor of smoke at the store shortly after 4 p.m. Fire volunteers located a burned portion of a smoke vent on the roof of the store and it was taken out of service, the sheriff's office said.

Staff and customers were allowed back into the store about 4:35 p.m.

On Friday night, the store was the subject of an off-the-cuff bomb threat, according to the sheriff's office.

About 9 p.m., a Walmart employee took a phone call from an unknown person, possibly a young male, who got upset when informed that the pharmacy was closed and Black Friday deals were over. According to the sheriff's office, the caller was said to have used a profanity and threatened, "I'm going to come and blow up the store."

The suspect called the store from an unknown number, the sheriff's office said. A deputy checked the area and did not find any suspicious activity after the threat.
