Feedback sought on projects

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Updates on Erie Canal locks restoration and other city-based canal corridor improvement projects will be given at a Flight of Five Forum next week. Among the topics are:

• The Flight of Five locks restoration “demonstration” project, involving rehabilitation of dormant locks 69 and 70, beginning this summer. Project Manager Peter Welsby will give an overview of restoration elements.

• Concepts for a Locks District gateway exhibit on Canal Street. Becky Burns, chairman of the Lockport Locks Heritage District Committee’s interpretation committee, will show and discuss a series of illustrations. Generally, the exhibit would include gateways at either end of Canal Street, identifying signs and interpretive exhibits.

• Concepts for the construction of an Erie Canal packet boat for use in demonstrating operation of the restored Flight of Five locks. Buffalo Maritime Center director Roger Allen and founder John Montague will lead the discussion. The boat is to be built by skilled volunteers from the community. Anyone who thinks they might be interested in volunteering should come to the forum and introduce themselves, Locks Heritage District Committee Chairman David Kinyon said.

The forum will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at the History Center of Niagara County, 215 Niagara St. Admission is free.
