District makes moves

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A few administrators are being moved around in the Lockport City School District for the new school year that starts in September.

The two biggest factors in the administrator moves are the closure of Washington Hunt and the departure of Barbara Surace, the now former director of early childhood programs and school health services. Hunt was closed at the conclusion of the 2012-13 school year due to the high cost of maintaining and updating the Rogers Avenue school.

Surace accepted a position with Kaleida Health in Buffalo, Superintendent Michelle T. Bradley said at the June 12 Board of Education meeting. Surace, whose resignation is effective today, has done some wonderful things in her year as early childhood director, Bradley said.

“We wish you all the best,” Bradley said.

Replacing Surace is Heather Walton, who becomes director after serving as assistant principal at Emmet Belknap Intermediate. Walton’s appointment was approved June 12 and she will be paid $93,375.

Shawn Murray will replace Walton as assistant principal at Belknap, with a salary of $87,886. Murray started the past year as a physical education teacher but then became interim assistant principal at North Park, replacing Nicole Cornuta who resigned in February.

With the closure of Hunt, Lockport will have four elementary schools. Former Hunt Principal Christopher Arnold will become principal at George Southard, replacing Ryan Schoenfeld who has been appointed principal at North Park Junior High School at a salary of $108,094.

Schoenfeld replaces James Snyder, who was appointed as an assistant principal at North Park with a salary of $105,321.

Other building principals are remaining the same. Frank Movalli stays at Lockport High School, Gary Wilson at Emmet Belknap, Russell Buckley at Lockport Opportunity Projects, Michael Sobieraski at Anna Merritt and Marianne Currie-Hall at Roy B. Kelley. Currie-Hall will remain as director of elementary education as well.

Assistant principals Bernadette Smith, Todd Sukdolak and Dawn Wylke will stay at the high school, while Scott Trachte stays at Emmet Belknap. Assistant Principal Jennifer Gilson remains at North Park.
