Woman in crash dies

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A Lockport woman involved in a two-vehicle crash Friday has died, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday.

Laken B. Pearce, 19, passed away early Monday morning at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo. She had been critically injured in an accident on Sunset Drive at the intersection of Leete Road at about 2:47 p.m. on Friday.

Sheriff James R. Voutour said the accident is being investigated by the New York State Police and the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Unit.

Sheriff’s deputies reported Pearce had been traveling west on Leete Road, but failed to yield the right of way to a northbound pickup truck. She had stopped, but then proceeded as the truck passed through the intersection, at which point there are only stop signs on Leete.

“At this point all we know is she stopped, then for whatever reason, she pulled out in front of him,” Voutour said.

The driver of the pickup truck, Paul I. Lunick, 49, of Grand Island was uninjured. Law enforcement will review the accident and state police will take a look at Lunick’s truck to determine whether or not Lunick had been speeding, Voutour said.

“We’ll have all that info eventually,” he said.

After the collision, both vehicles continued in a northwest direction and came to rest in a ditch on the west side of Sunset Drive. Pearce was airlifted by Mercy Flight to ECMC.
