Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Memorial Day parade units wanted
Units of all kinds — neighbors, school kids, church, civic and social groups, and individuals — are invited to march or ride in this year’s Memorial Day parade through the heart of the city.
The parade proceeds from Veterans Memorial, East Avenue across from Eastern Niagara Hospital, to the Niagara County Courthouse, 175 Hawley St. Formation will begin at noon May 26, a Sunday, at the Veterans Memorial and the march will begin at 1 p.m.
Units are asked to complete a parade application. To obtain one, visit or call the Navy Marine Club, 37 Park Ave., 433-2457; call organizing committee chairman Sid Parish at 433-6795; or call committee member Peggy Allen at 434-9708.
Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember the sacrifices of citizens who died while in military service. Thus the parade is “a solemn celebration, patriotic, and a little bit more delicate than the usual celebration,” Allen said. Parade units are asked to comply with the policies listed on the parade application.
After the parade, a public reception will be held at the Navy Marine Club, which is this year’s parade host. Lockport-based veterans groups take turns hosting the celebration from year to year.
Free boater safety course to be given
A free, eight-hour boater safety course will be administered June 1 by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Marine Patrol Division.
Fifty seats are available for the course, which can convey a discount on boat insurance, depending on the boater’s policy.
The course will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 1 at the Niagara County Public Safety Training Facility, 5574 Niagara St. Ext., east of the sheriff’s office.
Reservations are required. Call 438-3346 to get a seat.
