Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — Unemployment stayed flat in the City of Lockport, according to figures released Thursday by the state labor department.
About 900 people were without jobs in the month of November, the same number reported for both October and November 2011. Unemployment for the city was about 8.4 percent last month, down from 8.7 percent in October, but higher than the 8.1 percent reported for November 2011.
There wasn’t much of a change at the county level either. The state labor department reported 9,300 residents were without a job, 8.5 percent unemployment, in November, staying flat from October when 9,500 were jobless. But both were higher than the 8,700 people or 7.9 percent reported a year ago.
In the Buffalo Niagara Falls region, unemployment for November was a reported 7.9 percent, as 44,800 people were jobless. Those numbers are lower than the 47,300 residents or 8.2 percent, reported for October, but higher than the 42,700 and 7.5 percent from a year ago.
Statewide, New York had 756,200 residents unemployed in November, a 7.9 percent jobless rate, better than what was reported for October. Then, the Empire State saw 795,800 people without a job and a 8.3 percent unemployment rate. Last year, 750,700 New Yorkers were without a job, a 7.9 percent rate.
The state reported the private sector job count increased by 88,000 over the past 12 months. The Buffalo Niagara Falls region lost 1,500 jobs during the same time period, the third consecutive month the area posted a loss.
Across the country, 11.4 million Americans were jobless in November, an unemployment rate of 7.4 percent. Those numbers bested October and November 2011 reports, which had 11.7 million or 7.5 percent unemployed and 12.6 million or 8.2 percent unemployed, respectively.
