Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A few hundred students will be coming to Lockport High School on Sunday for a regional Distributive Education Clubs of America competition.

DECA is an organization for students who study the fields of marketing, business, finance and hospitality. Students participate in informational and leadership conferences, as well as competitive events based on certain areas in the business and marketing fields.

Sunday’s competition will feature roughly 15 different schools participating in various events. The top six in each catergory will advance to the state level of competition, to be held in March in Rochester. From there, winners go on to the international event to be held in April in Anaheim, Calif.

And this is the first time Lockport has hosted a DECA event. The school has had a team for about five years and has had students make it to the international competition in years past. There are 55 kids on this year’s team.

Since the start, everyone in the city school district has been behind idea of Lockport hosting Sunday’s competition, said business teacher and DECA adviser Jill DiTullio.

”They’ve been very supportive,” she said. “The cafeteria workers and the staff are coming in on their day off. This is a school community event. It’s a real positive for us.”

Opening ceremonies are slated for 9 a.m., with an awards ceremony at the end of the day. There are about 40 different categories to compete in, most involving a role-playing scenario or a multiple-choice test.

To prepare, the DECA members have been practicing with tests and old scenarios. They won’t know the details of tests or the role-playing scenarios until Sunday.

For Lockport senior Carly Kane, now in her third year in DECA, competitions are a great time to meet new people from different schools. And hosting that competition is a great thing for Lockport.
