Mailman hit by SUV

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A U.S. Postal carrier was struck by a sport utility vehicle while walking his route Friday morning on East Avenue.

The carrier, Eric W. Maska, 43, of Pendleton, was treated for injuries and released from Eastern Niagara Hospital on Friday.

He was struck by an SUV driven by Melvin P. Nicholas, 80, of Minnick Road.

According to Lockport police, Nicholas exited the driveway of Great Lakes Surgical, 160 East Ave., turned left turn onto East Avenue, and struck Maska, who was crossing the street in front of DiPaolo’s barber shop, about 10:11 a.m.

Maska was thrown to the ground by the impact and was taken by ambulance to the hospital, the accident report said.

Nicholas was given a ticket for failure to use due care while driving.
