Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — In an effort to promote safety, Lockport City Schools will undergo an emergency drill and a safety audit, Superintendent Michelle Bradley announced Wednesday.
The moves come in light of last month’s shooting tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., where 26 people were killed. Twenty of them were children.
Bradley said district officials have been reviewing safety policies and procedures since December. In addition, law enforcement officers will be performing walkthroughs of district buildings to familiarize themselves with the layouts. A similar walkthrough was done at Lockport High School last month.
Bradley said the emergency drill will be held at a future date. A similar but limited drill was done in Lockport City Schools about five years ago.
”And the audit will come at no cost to the district,” Bradley said.
In other district news, Niagara County Community College was the recipient of a Liberty Partnership grant. The grant is totaled at $1.75 million over five years.
NCCC will give some money to three area school districts, Niagara Falls, North Tonawanda and Lockport. The grant is for student support, items such as tutoring, counseling and field trips.
• Trustee Diane Phelps received the Board Achievement Award from the New York State School Boards Association. The award is given by NYSSBA to “acknowledge the extensive time and effort required of school board members who continually strive to expand their knowledge and skills for better board governance.”
