Paladino property purchase raises eyebrows

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — What could a company run by a former New York gubernatorial candidate have in mind concerning recently purchased Center Street property in Lewiston?

That’s what Lewiston Mayor Terry Collesano said he’s trying to find out after Buffalo’s Ellicott Development Corp., with Chairman Carl Paladino, purchased a strip of land in the 700 block of Lewiston’s busy business district in November.

Now, Collesano said he’s hoping a meeting between him, Paladino and Assemblyman John Ceretto will provide more clarity than what the situation has presented thus far.

“I don’t know much more than what’s been in the papers about this,” Collesano said. “We’re looking to schedule a meeting ... We’re going to sit down and hear what (they’re) proposing and to see what the village can offer to help get any project started.”

Paladino’s company recently completed the purchase of 756 and 784-790 Center St. for $1.4 million from Hogan & Willig PLLC of Amherst. The land currently has two buildings, both filled with active tenants, including Grandpaws Pet Emporium, The Country Doctor and Smith Brothers Pizza.

The purchase also includes vacant land with frontage on Onondoga Street.

At the time of the purchase, Ellicott Development said it is looking at mixed-use redevelopment of the property, with residential and commercial possibilities, but had no specifics in mind.

Paladino’s son, William Paladino, who serves as Ellicott Development’s chief executive officer, said at the time of the purchase the company is unsure what it will keep and what it would demolish but would be showing its plans to the Village of Lewiston soon.

“There are some things we want to go over with them,” Collesano said. “But we can’t do anything before talking to them.”

Officials at Ellicott Development could not be reached for comment.
