Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — A utility crew working on tree limbs and power lines along Clinton Street escaped injury Tuesday afternoon after a live power line gave way, landing on a utility truck, which then caught fire.

City firefighters were forced to wait nearly half an hour before New York State Electric & Gas could cut the power to the area, allowing them to safely douse the flames.

The black smoke from the truck's burning tires could be seen for blocks. Firefighters kept a watchful eye on the flames; had they spread, an evacuation may have been required due to propane trucks on the front of the vehicle.

Clinton Street was closed to traffic between Lake Avenue and Adam Street and was still closed as of 3:36 p.m.

The incident, which happened around 2:15 p.m., may have been triggered by a tree limb that the crew was removing gave way.
