Sisters of St. Mary of Namur to be honored

A reception will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at DeSales Catholic School to honor the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur for their 150-year commitment to service in the Lockport community.

The event also serves as the public launch of the Legacy of Caring Continues capital campaign, and is hosted by campaign co-chairwomen Jennifer Murphy and Ann Murphy-Beaulieu.

The campaign will help fund new and renovated residential and health-related spaces for the sisters. This is the first time in the congregation’s history in Western New York that a capital campaign has been undertaken to directly address the care of the sisters.

“This is a tremendous undertaking on our part.” said Sister Caroline Smith, provincial superior for the sisters’ Eastern Province. “It reaffirms our continued commitment to the people of Western New York while also allowing us to meet the long-term needs of our sisters.”

The Sisters of St. Mary of Namur established their first ministries in the City of Lockport, by founding St. Joseph’s Academy and staffing all-Catholic parochial schools in the city since 1863.

After the merger of De Sales and St. Joseph’s Academy, the sisters were on the staff of the high school and brought innovation to Catholic education in the diocese through the first elementary school consolidation — Lockport Catholic — and the subsequent moving of the school into one facility.

Countless people in Lockport and throughout Western New York have been educated and otherwise touched through the ministries and mission of the Sisters of St. Mary.

“Our campaign is a transformational event at this time in our history. Our success will ensure our presence and our diverse ministries to the people of the area and also provide a home for our sisters as they age," said Sister Marian Baumler, provincial counselor for the Sisters of St. Mary and the congregation's campaign spokesperson.

For more information about the campaign and the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur, call Sister Marian at 884-8221, ext. 14, or attend the reception.

Dessert and coffee will be served at the reception and several of the Sisters will attend to greet friends and former students.
