Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The 2013 Lockport Duck Race will be held Saturday on Market Street at the Adam Street bridge.
The race, which is benefiting the Lockport Lions Club this year, has more than 1,000 entrants, that is, plastic ducks that have been sold for $5 apiece at various Lockport locations since May.
Around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, the ducks will be floated in the Erie Canal and the first five that cross the finish line will fetch prizes for their owners, including: First place, a chest freezer from Murphy Appliances and $100 in groceries from Niagara Produce Lockport; second place, a family dinner-and-movie night from Cammarata’s and the Historic Palace Theatre; third place, $150 gas card from Crosby’s; fourth place, a 19-inch HDTV; and fifth place, a $100 gift certificate from Garlock’s Restaurant. Owners of the fastest ducks do not have to be present at the race to claim their prizes.
Race organizers have planned an afternoon of festivities centered around the race, on the canal banks, from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be a duck pond game and Flora the Clown will offer balloon animals, tattoos and assorted children’s activities. Magician Tony Weiland will perform. Thomas the Tank Engine and Butch the Conductor, from Medina Railroad Museum, will pose for pictures with children.
Musician David Stockton will perform easy listening music from 2 to 4 p.m. and drawings for more than 40 consolation prizes will be held between songs.
Ducks will be sold at the race site until 2 p.m. Saturday. To purchase one online, visit LockportDuckRaces.com.
Ahead of the race, voting in the childrens’ “duck-orating” contest continues through Thursday. Entries are on display at Frames By Ames, Gould’s Flowers, Hairs to You, K.M. Treats, Lake FX Photography, the Learning Edge, Mills Jewelers, Niagara’s First Impressions and Tom’s Diner.
Voting is anonymous and ballots are available at all display locations. If a location is closed, ballots can be completed or cast at another location.
The top five vote-getting ducks will get prizes for their decorators from Niagara’s First Impressions, Gould’s Flowers, K.M. Treats, the Learning Edge and the Niagara Art Trail.
