5th Ward candidates invited to Thursday forum

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — The Niagara Organizing Alliance for Hope will host a 5th Ward alderman candidates' forum Thursday at City Hall.

The forum begins at 6 p.m. in Common Council chambers. Candidates are incumbent Alderman Kenneth M. Genewick and his challenger, Phyllis Green. Genewick and Green are squaring off in the primary election next week for the Republican ballot line in the general election.

Green, a registered Republican, is the Democrats' nominee in the general election, while Genewick has the Independence and Conservative ballot lines locked in.

Preceding the forum, at 5:30 p.m., local NOAH organizers will be on hand to introduce themselves.

According to Peter J. Hubbard, spokesman for NOAH and VOICE Buffalo, between Aug. 28 and Aug. 31, organizers surveyed more than 325 registered Republicans in the 5th Ward and asked them to identify issues that they'd like the Common Council candidates to address. Questions posed to candidates by NOAH are based on survey.

"Residents identified issues related to taxes, city infrastructure, attracting new businesses and residents, crime and neighborhood safety, public and alternate transit and investment in arts and culture," Hubbard said.

NOAH describes itself as a coalition of faith and community leaders working together for social justice.
