Car saved from burning Somerset garage

SOMERSET — Niagara County fire investigators are looking into the cause of a fire early Monday that destroyed a garage on Haight Road in the Town of Somerset.

According to a report from the Niagara County Sheriff's Office, a homeowner was heard three explosions around 5:16 a.m. and when she investigated, she could see smoke and fire coming from the back of the garage.

The woman woke up her husband R. and called 911. The husband removed a classic car from the garage, located at 9782 Haight Road.

The man told a deputy that he had not used any of the equipment in the garage in the last day, and he stated there were no electrical problems in the garage that he was aware of.

Barker firefighters extinguished the blaze. Damage to the 20-by-50-foot structure is estimated at $65,000.
