Canadian chopper makes emergency landing
A Canadian Royal Air Force search and rescue helicopter made an emergency landing Sunday in Wilson, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office said.
Five crew members were on the chopper and no injuries were reported.
The crew reportedly said they were working with the U.S. Coast Guard on a search and rescue operation, looking for a ship in distress on Lake Ontario. But according to the pilot, the helicopter started experiencing trouble when a bird flew into its engine.
Authorities said the chopper had to land at about 5:30 a.m. in a farmer’s field in the 3100 block of Lake Road. The aircraft landed about 500 feet away from the road.
The U.S. Coast Guard and a Border Patrol agent responded to the scene. U.S. Customs was notified, the Sheriff’s Office said.
