A fire that started in a garage caused substantial damage to a MacIntosh Lane home and destroyed two vehicles on Sunday morning.

The lone occupant fled the home before the fire spread and four family cats found inside the home after the fire was put out escaped apparent injury, according to Niagara County Sheriff’s officials.

The sheriff’s office received several 911 calls reporting black smoke coming from an attached garage at 6730 MacIntosh Lane about 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Wendelville Volunteer Fire Co. responded to the scene along with several other nearby companies to extinguish the fire. It was reported that one volunteer firefighter sustained a foot injury.

The residence next door, 6726 Macintosh, sustained exposure damage due to the intense heat of the fire.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family with temporary living arrangements for the adults, children and animals.

The Niagara County Cause and Origin Team is investigating the fire.
