FRIDAY: Staffing agency opens payroll center in upstate NY (12:40 p.m.)

Associated Press

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — Adecco, the world’s biggest staffing agency, is opening a new payroll operations center in suburban Rochester that will create 200 new jobs by 2010.

The Switzerland-based group said Friday that the 13,000-square-foot Shared Services Center at a technology park in Gates will distribute payrolls to more than a half-million workers across the United States.

Adecco employs 33,000 people worldwide, and about 1,000 of its 6,000 U.S. workers are in Rochester. Its expansion here is “one more step ... in a path of revitalization” of upstate New York’s economy, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The company finds work for some 700,000 people in 60 countries around the world, including 120,000 in the United States.

Klaus Jacobs, a German-born coffee, chocolate and employment tycoon, created Adecco in 1996 from the employment firms Adia and Ecco. He died last week at age 71.
