James Russell LaRoach

CHARLOTTE, NC — James Russell LaRoach, 86, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2013, at Carolinas Medical Center.

He was born on August 26, 1927 in Lockport, NY, to the late Russell John and Dorothy McGraw LaRoach. Mr. LaRoach was a US Army veteran, where he was stationed in Korea. He was a graduate of UNC-Charlotte, where he was a member of the debate team and affectionately known as one of "Bonnie's boys". He was founder and owner of Charlotte Sound & Visual Systems. Mr. LaRoach was a member of Sharon Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. He was a member of Temple Masonic Lodge #676 AF&AM and also a member of the Charlotte Valley Scottish Rite, where he was a 32nd degree KCCH (Knight Commander of the Court of Honour). Mr. LaRoach was also a member of the Oasis Shriners, where he was Past Captain of the Shrine Audio-Visual Unit, Past President of the Red Fez Shrine Club and assisted with the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas for many years. He was a member of the Royal Order of Jesters-Charlotte Court 109. He was also a Past President of the Civitans in Greensboro, NC.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Frederick LaRoach.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Elizabeth Alexander LaRoach; children, David LaRoach and wife, Patricia of Fort Mill, SC, Linda McGinnis of Charlotte, NC, John LaRoach and fiance, Nancy Allison of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Jeffrey McGinnis and wife, Naomi and their children, Isabella and Harper McGinnis, and Katie Semrad and husband, Charles.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 17, at Sharon Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. Rob Blumer and Pastor John Stanley officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, c/o Oasis Shriners, 604 Doug Mayes Place, Charlotte, NC 28262. Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville, NC, is serving the LaRoach family.
