Elizabeth "Mae" Scheffler

LOCKPORT — Elizabeth "Mae" Scheffler, nee Ward, 93, entered into eternal peace on January 11, 2014, at the Odd Fellows and Rebekah Rehabilitation Center. Elizabeth Mae was born on January 22, 1920, a daughter of the late Ira Daniel and Dora Belle (nee Dodge) Ward.

She attended school in Wilson and soon after began working as a waitress. She also worked in many local businesses, many of which are no longer familiar to most of us. She was a waitress at the Olcotta Restaurant in Olcott, where she fondly remembered receiving a $5 tip from Louis Armstrong. She worked at Scheffler's  Hardware, Scheffler's Restaurant, Schultz's Lakeside Market, Nevin's Red and White, and Russ Hulbert's pickle factory, all local Wilson businesses. She also worked for many years mending felts at the Newfane Felt Mill. After "retiring" she worked as a seamstress out of her home mending and tailoring clothing for many of the Wilson community. Mae always made the best of every situation and loved every job she had.

Mae was a member of Exley United Methodist Church, the Lockport Rebekah Lodge, St. Paul's Lutheran Bible study and quilter's groups, and the Wilson and Newfane Golden Agers. Mae loved life and had many hobbies and interests during her wonderful life. Some of the things she could be found enjoying were fishing (a Mother's Day tradition), playing cards, sewing quilts, doing cross-word puzzles, making dolls, camping with family, bowling, playing bingo, reciting poetry (often some she learned in grade school), and she especially cherished spending time with her family. Mae was a very kind and fun-loving person. She had a generous heart  and always gave everyone the benefit of the doubt.

She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Scheffler in 1996; her sisters, Shirley Reising of Sebring, FL and Mary Cleveley of Wilson.

Mae (or Mae-Mae as her great-grandchildren called her), leaves her loving memories to be  cherished by her daughters, Susanne Elko and Patricia Drewes of Wilson; her grandchildren, Teresa (Ronald) Kam, Trisha Drewes of Wilson, Patti (Patrick) O'Keefe of Russell, OH, and Renee Drewes of Simpsonville, SC; her great-grandchildren, Jordan (Sabrina) Kam of Ransomville, Joseph Kam and Emily Mae Kam of Wilson, Heather (Kevin) Zastrocky of Lockport, NY, Peyton, Parker and Abbey O'Keefe of Russell, OH, and Bryce Drewes of Wilson; her friend, Joyce Rohring and her lifelong "pal" Geraldine Swann, and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at the Hamilton Clark Funeral Home, 270 Young Street, Wilson, NY, on Saturday, January 18th, at 11:00 AM. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 3049, Syracuse, NY, 13220.
