ALBION — Mr. John L. Sylvester, of Medina, passed away on Monday evening, May 13, 2013, at the Martin-Linsen Hospice Residence in Albion.

Mr. Sylvester was born in Bath, NY, Sept. 7, 1924, a son of the late Orange and Laura (Fry) Sylvester. A graduate of Haverling High School, class of 1942, he was a US Army-Air Forces veteran. He served with the 482 Squadron, 505 Bomb Group, 313 Wing, 20th Air Force near Quam from 1943-46. Following his discharge, he graduated from Rochester Business Institute in 1949 and married Betty Lowery on August 27, 1949. They resided in Wheatfield from 1955-1972 when they moved to Medina. Active in the community, he was a member of the Board of Directors of Medina Savings & Loan Assn. for 17 years; member of the Board of Directors of Medina Memorial Health Care System from 1982-1994 and 1996 to 2012; Board member and Treasurer of the Foundation; Orchard Manor Nursing Home Board and E & R Machine in Lockport. He was the treasurer of the Adam's Fire Dept. in Wheatfield from 1956-71.

Mr. Sylvester was employed by Lifetime Dist. in Fishers, NY from 1949-55; and in their Niagara Falls, ON office 1955-62 as Comptroller/Treasurer; Consumer Home Products, Div. of US Industries, 1962-64 as Division Comptroller; Sigmamotor, Inc. from 1965-1982 as Treasurer/Comptroller; Monroe Electronics, Inc. from 1968-1986 where he began as Comptroller advanced to Executive VP and at the time of his resignation was President; and Trek, Inc. 1989-1992 as Comptroller, retiring in 1992.

Survivors include his daughter, Sherry (Timothy) Conley of Middleport; his grand-       children, Aaron (Kelly) and Candice; great-grandchildren, Tiffany, Christopher and Patrick;   daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Sylvester; sister, Evelyn Lynch of North Tonawanda. He was      predeceased by his wife, Betty, on March 6, 2002; his son, Christopher, in August 2001; and his brother, Clayton, in 1960.

Friends may call on Friday (2-4, 6-8) at the Cooper Funeral Home, 215 W. Center St., Medina, where his funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11. The Rev. Thomas Gardner will officiate. Military honors will be accorded at graveside at Boxwood Cemetery by members of Lincoln Post #1483 VFW and Butts-Clark Post #204, American Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Orleans, Inc.
