Shirley I. Griffin, 76, of Park St., Union Springs, NY, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at Auburn Community Hospital. Shirley was born in Cuba, NY on Sept. 15, 1937 to the late J. Allen and Winifred Lutzie Runyan. Shirley was previously employed by Acme Electric, IBM and General Motors. Shirley enjoyed her most recent job working for the Union Springs School District, driving school bus for the disabled children. Shirley was the first woman to be elected to the Union Springs Village Board. She was honored to hold the position for three terms. She was involved in several projects to improve Frontenac Park, such as the Recreation Program and creating the boat launch.
In her earlier years, Shirley was a state diving champion and a lifeguard at Cuba Lake. Shirley was an avid golfer: one of her most notable accomplishments as a golfer was achieving a hole-in-one at Wells College Golf Course. Most of all, Shirley loved spending time with her family. She was a very proud grandmother.
Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, G. Robert Griffin; her daughter, Dawn (Kevin) Taylor; two granddaughters, Alexandra Taylor Blackman (Spencer) and Katherine Taylor; her brother, Larry Runyan; nieces and nephews, Kaldonna (P.J.) Schaller, Rhonda (Steve) Saxton, Karla (Shadd) Lee, Cindy (Kurt) Roberts, Greg Runyan, Charles (Susanne) Runyan, David (Marge) Griffin, Jill Rignel, Scott (Katie) Griffin and several great-nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her infant son, Brian, in 1957, as well as two brothers, Bobby Runyan and James A. Runyan.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 PM on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at the Auburn First Alliance Church, N. Seward Ave., Auburn, with a memorial service to follow at 6 PM. Donations in memory of Shirley I. Griffin may be made to Union Springs Fire Department, 237 Cayuga St., Union Springs, NY 13160; or the Frontenac Historical Society, 8 Cayuga St., Union Springs, NY 13160. Arrangements are with White Chapel Funeral Home Inc., 197 South St., Auburn.
