James Joseph Currie, age 79, of Newfane, died on Monday, April 15, 2013 in Roswell Park Hospital, after a short, courageous battle against cancer. Jim was born on January 14, 1934 in Lewiston, NY, the 12th of 13 children born to the late Frederick Miles and Mary O'Neill Currie.
Jim attended schools in Lewiston, Youngstown and Wilson, NY, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1953. On the day Jim returned from the Navy, he applied at the former Harrison Radiator, Division of General Motors, Inc. He started work that same evening and stayed employed there for 37 years. Jim married Marlene Carol Bradley on June 20, 1958 in the former St. Charles Roman Catholic Church in Olcott, NY. Over the years Jim had enjoyed fishing, bowling, golf, playing cards, walking, traveling and watching any sport on television. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
When his son was young he was assistant Boy Scout leader and the coach of little league team. He supported his daughters through Brownies and Girl Scouts. His main way to support them was to buy Girl Scout cookies, especially the thin mints. He followed his children and grandchildren through a wide variety of sports.
Jim had been a member of St. Brendan Roman Catholic Church since moving to Newfane in 1969. He served his church in many ways - he was a Eucharist minister, member of bereavement committee and was a money counter for many years. Over the years he worked on the maintenance committee, lawn fetes, and 20-week club dances.
