John D. Gerling

CHITTENANGO —

John D. Gerling, 78, of Chittenango, passed away on Thursday at his home. Born and raised in Burt, NY, John graduated from DeSales High School in Lockport. He has been a resident of Chittenango the past 31 years. John was a master carpenter and had been employed with Linbrook Homes and was also self-employed operating John Gerling Enterprises for many years, retiring in 2005. John was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Chittenango and was a Third Degree Knights of Columbus. John served in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed hunting and woodworking.
Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Susan Gerling; his sons, Derrick Gerling of Burt and Frank Gerling of Chittenango; and several nieces and nephews.
A prayer service will be held at 9:30 AM on Tuesday at the G.F. Zimmer Funeral Home, 702 Legion Drive, Chittenango, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick's Church, Chittenango. Burial will follow in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 4-7 PM on Monday at the funeral home. Contributions in his memory may be made to the American Heart Assoc., the American Cancer Society or the Wounded Warrior Project.
