APPLE VALLEY, CA —
Former Middleport resident Ethel Frohlich Smith passed away on October 30, 2013 in California, at the age of 95. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Hugh; her sisters, Pauline Chestnut and Bettina Weld; and parents, F.K. and Beatrice Frohlich. She leaves a daughter, Bettina Townsend (Homer) of Middleport; son, Christopher of California; grandson, Patrick Enders of Kenmore; grandson, Loren Enders of California and two great-grandsons.
Ethel was born in Ballston Spa and grew up in Middleport where her father was Principal and Superintendent of Schools. She graduated from Cortland Normal School and taught in Long Island and Cattaraugus schools before taking a job as a teacher in Wasilla, AK, in the mid 1940s. She met and married her husband, Hugh, in Alaska, and they had their two children there before returning to the "outside." The family moved to Apple Valley, CA, in 1953, where Ethel taught kindergarten. After retirement, she enjoyed golfing and bridge and was an avid reader and walker, continuing to walk for several miles daily until well into her 90s.
