EDITORIAL: What a week for Lockport

Last week really was a great one for the City of Lockport.

You had the ice arena announcement on Tuesday and then Niagara Produce’s “soft opening” on Friday. From what we heard and our reporter and photographer saw, it wasn’t all that soft. The place was packed.

We can’t say it enough, the city is on the upswing with regard to development, entertainment and more. It all adds up to a better Lockport. It also makes Lockport a draw for visitors and residents from other areas.

The ice arena will host games, tournaments and maybe even other events that will offer another reason for people to come downtown or to Lockport in general. If managed correctly, the arena will be a boon for the area. It has to be better than the vacant, probably infested-with-something old Jubilee building that stands there now.

Niagara Produce — well we know how well it has done on at Transit and Millersport. Now there’s a mini version downtown. It’s a great location in a fantastic building. We’ll see if parking and traffic issues arise, but let’s be honest, would you rather have parking and traffic issues because of interest and popularity or no parking issues because there’s nothing worth coming to town for.

On this page it’s common for us to call out local leaders for not doing something and not moving projects forward. We have to be fair and offer credit where credit is due. Mayor Mike Tucker and his administration deserve kudos for this one. Keep up the good work and get after the next major announcement.
