EDITORIAL: McCain’s VP pick monumental
Whether you’re a Republican, Democrat of something in-between, you’re probably impressed with Senator John McCain’s pick of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate.
Why, because it proves that women are and should be on the same level as the men when it comes to presidential politics.
When everyone was expecting just another Washington politician, McCain faked everyone out by picking a woman, who has been hailed as an everywoman.
She’s as far from Wasgihnton as you can get.
The pick, if nothing else, is monumental in turning over the apple-cart of presidential politics.
He went against the norm, which many have come to expect from Republicans.
She’s a hockey mom with five kids. Her oldest enlisted in the military and her youngest suffers from down syndrome.
She should appeal to many, many women, which Barack Obama forfeited by not picking New York Senator Hillary Clinton as his running mate. There were obviously other reasons Clinton wasn’t picked, but besides the historic move, McCain will garner a good amount of the female votes because of this.
Let’s be honest, it’s all about strategy, as much as they’ll talk up the symbolism of it all. McCain’s strategy may end up being a good one; we don’t know. But let’s not lose sight of the great victory having a woman on a presidential ticket is for America.
