EDITORIAL: Media will keep presidential race ugly

Staff Reports
Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

LOCKPORT The balloons and confetti have fallen. The national conventions are over. In less than 60 days our next president will be elected.

Let the games begin.

If you thought things were getting ugly the past two or three weeks, expect a lot worse in the coming eight weeks or so. The gloves will be off as Barack Obama and Joe Biden take on John McCain and Sarah Palin.

While we’re sure the candidates will stick to debating policies (wink, wink), we’re sure some personal attacks will fly. The mudslinging will be fierce.

But most of the ugliness that is national politics can be attributed to the national spotlight and amount of media covering “the most important election of our lives.”

Never before have blogs or podcasts been part of the presidential coverage. News was fast back in 2004, but it’s faster these days. Considering Obama was going to send a text message to supporters on who he picked as a running mate, that’s telling in how our world has changed.

Expect more this year. And expect it to get even uglier.
