EDITORIAL: Council let taxpayers down
Recycling isn’t coming to Lockport. No matter how often this is stated, we’re always surprised.
We shouldn’t be, apparently.
Whoever said recycling was going to be free? It never will be and never should have been assumed that it would be.
There is and will always be a cost. But for the Common Council to get to that end, current costs in the budget need to be cut. That’s the problem. This council wasn’t prepared to make the necessary cuts needed within the current budget to afford adding recycling, which people said they wanted.
There’s a certain amount of cowardice here because it’s an election year.
Residents have said they want recycling, they just didn’t want their taxes raised to get it. We don’t blame them.
No, we blame the Common Council for not looking at the budget and making the necessary cuts, which may be tough, to insert recycling into the mix.
Cut, cut, cut. Find the money.
Do they think it will be any easier next year? There will be raises next year, pensions next year, insurance costs. It will never get better.
That being said, the challenge for the next council is to find a way to get recycling in, without raising costs. We’ll tell you how: Cut the work force or cut the work force in concert with programs that are not necessary.
We’re not going to stop asking, when is recycling coming? We know residents want it, so we won’t stop opining until the city has it.
There are certain things you expect your city to do. Most communities offer services people deserve and do it without raising taxes. Recycling is one of them.
Once again, they came up with an excuse. Lots of talk and no action.
