ROOT: Let's end the bombing campaign

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — I have mixed emotions about this thing called “yarn bombing.”

The yarn bombing in front of City Centre is a mess. Yarn is scattered everywhere and it needs to be cleaned up or taken down.

I don’t see the point in yarn bombing. When the pianos first started popping up around Lockport, I thought they were neat. They are well-placed and they look nice, at least from a distance.

When I went to Cambridge, Mass., to see Stephen King read from his new book, I saw pianos around Cambridge. I was a bit disappointed that the Lockport pianos were not an original thing, but I think our pianos look better. So I am on board with them.

I am not so on board with the yarn.

First of all, half the trees or lampposts I’ve seen have scarves wrapped around them. We should be giving those scarves to people who will need them in the coming months. It makes us look kind of arrogant, dressing trees instead of needy people.

Yarn bombing is a worldwide thing and I guess I should be kind of giddy that it is happening here in Lockport, but I’m not. Judging by the pictures from around the world, some people take this stuff seriously. They knit covers for statues, cars, bicycles and old British phone booths. The point, I am guessing, is to add some color to drab and dreary scenery.

I wonder what’s wrong with the scenery as it is.

In its purest form, yarn bombing is like graffiti, that is, vandalism.

I can hear the response from supporters: “Oh come on now you old codger! Yarn bombing is fun and adds color to our community!”

And here’s my response to them: If I wanted the trees on Main Street to look like something out of a Dr. Seuss cartoon, I would have brought the idea up myself.
