DAVIS: Look for the laughter in everyday life

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal

Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — How is your autumn going? Are you making time to savor the fall festival season?

Have you picked out a golden pumpkin to display, cook or bake in a pie?

Have you decided on a pumpkin design to carve or to paint for your harvest celebration or Halloween party?

Have you taken time to sip a cup of spiced cider, mulled wine or cinnamon tea?

Did you stack hay bales, bundle corn stalks or display a scarecrow to celebrate the abundance of this harvest season?

Have you and your children raked leaves, only to roll in them later?

Did you stock your candy bowl with sweets for next week’s trick-or-treaters?

It’s not too late.

There is still time to enjoy the wonders of this season and look for the laughter in everyday life moments. Despite all the negative things going on in the world around you (and there are plenty), you can still look for reasons to smile at life and laugh.

You can select or create an outfit to wear as you give out treats or chaperone a harvest party. Your kids or grandkids may still need help picking out or making the perfect costume. Just listen to the excitement of children around you! Kid conversations during any holiday season can really make you laugh, and remind you to look at the world through innocent eyes.

Your neighbor may still need some help with fallen leaves, clearing brush or autumn gardening.

You can still take a walk by the Erie Canal, Niagara Falls or Letchworth State Park, and enjoy the splendor of the season.

There is still time to arrange for hot cider and doughnuts for your family and friends to warm up with after trick-or-treating.

You and your co-workers can still plan the perfect harvest work reception or lunch and (if your job allows) you can still choose the most creative costume to wear to work — and laugh.

Despite Christmas decorations already “peeking around the corners” of stores, it’s still not too late to place heart-warming fall decorations in and around your home or office to help you savor harvest time. Remember, Thanksgiving is coming soon too! The fragrance of an apple cinnamon or pumpkin spice candle can do wonders for calming your soul; so can a fall bonfire. Try it sometime!

I recently found laughter in an everyday life moment and I invite you to keep your mind and heart open to the same.

A new friend and I love walking the Erie Canal towpath. She spurs me on to a better workout, and I am encouraged to walk faster when I walk with her. We started out on what seemed like a brisk sunny morning. As the wind picked up, we pulled hoods and hats closer around us and pressed on. The wind became a gentle sprinkle, and by the time we were walking back, we realized that we were now “power-walking” in the torrential downpour of an autumn rainstorm.

I couldn’t help but look around and point out to her that we were the only ones out walking in the now-horrendous weather. It was hilarious!

There is humor in everyday life. We just have to look for it.
