Lockport Union-Sun & Journal — For the past 14 years I have been a member of the Ultimate Physique Fitness Club located on Ann Street in Lockport. During this time I have first-handedly witnesses the growth, both in size and in scope, of this important business.
Karen and Bob Muscarella have done an amazing job as small business owners of growing this business into a true community asset. They have created a culture where people of all ages, levels of fitness and different types of backgrounds can feel comfortable and welcome. Whether it is purchasing new equipment, adding cutting edge classes or providing helpful advice, they can be counted on to meet the needs of their clients.
Ultimate Physique is again in an evolutionary process and hopes to expand its program by moving into the former Washington Hunt School. As most readers of this newspaper will know, their first attempt to have this sale approved by a public vote was narrowly defeated. A second vote has been scheduled for July 29.
Over the next several weeks there will be an effort to educate the public on the importance of this project. Besides allowing the growth of Lockport’s only hometown gym, it will be a creative use of a dormant building. We all know what happens to unoccupied buildings. They slowly deteriorate, become increasingly expensive to maintain and become the subject of vandalism. Washington Hunt deserves better.
Cities all over the Northeast are taking urban buildings and re-purposing them for new life. Let’s not miss the opportunity to reduce our maintenance costs and add a new source of tax revenue. Still on the fence about how to vote? I suggest that you stop at the current location and speak to the owners. Once you see their vision and their enthusiasm you will be sure to vote “yes.”
